Stocks edged higher Tuesday, holding firm after a modest retreat.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.4%, or 141 points. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite rose 0.1%. The S&P 500 advanced 0.2%. All three indexes bounced between small gains and losses throughout the day.  Chip stocks, lately one of the hottest corners of the stock market, pulled back.
